Buursma first joined the network as a site producer and subsequently switched to the digital business reporter. She began her broadcasting career at Calvin University, where she worked as a Copy editor, Staff reporter, and feature section editor. While there, she wrote long-form articles for the features section, primarily concentrating on local stories.

Madalyn also worked as an ecojournalist intern at the West Michigan Environmental Action Council. While there, she conducted research and wrote 12 blog articles about regional environmental challenges. She also wrote press releases, other advertising materials, and WMEAC’s monthly column for the Grand Haven Tribune.

After that, Madalyn was hired as an author’s assistant at En-Gedi Resource Center in Holland, Michigan.
