Mason first worked at KJRH-TV in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He then went to WCAU-TV in Philadelphia, which is owned by CBS where he worked for two years. This was the beginning of his association with CBS. Before joining CBS News, Mason served at WCBS-TV in New York City.

Mason came to CBS News in 1986 as a correspondent. He served as the London Bureau correspondent from the year 1987 to 1990. In 1991, Mason was made the Chief Moscow Correspondent and served here up to 1993. Mason also Participated in the coverage of the 1991 Soviet coup attempt from Moscow, Russia which attracted an award. He has as well been working in New York City since 1993 and was made the Business Correspondent in 1998. Mason was made the co-anchor of CBS This Morning Saturday in early 2012, and in 2019 was made a co-host of the CBS This Morning weekday program.

Further, on June 19, 2017, Mason was made the interim anchor for the weekday editions of the CBS Evening News as he replaced Scott Pelley. Mason lastly worked as an anchor of CBS Evening News on Friday, December 1, 2017, and was replaced by Jeffrey Todd Glor as the permanent weekday anchor of the program the following Monday, December 4. Anthony is the main correspondent and also substitutes for CBS Sunday Morning with Jane Pauley on several occasions. Mason was absent from the broadcast in some programs in 2017 as he was an interim anchor at the CBS Evening News.
