She later joined WMBD-TV in Peoria, Illinois as a reporter in 1990. Also, she worked as an anchor at KWCH-TV in Wichita, Kansas In the same year. Burton joined ABC7 in 1992 as a weekend co-anchor/reporter before being promoted to 5 p.m. weekday co-anchor and 10 p.m. contributing anchor in 2003.

Burton received an award for Salute to Excellence International in 2008 for the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ). In addition, she has been rewarded with several awards including the Phenomenal Woman Award in 1997, the Thurgood Marshall Award in 2004 and 2005, and the Kizzy Image as well as an  Achievement Award in 1998. Cheryl also won the Russ Ewing Award in 2004 for her coverage of the E2 nightclub tragedy by the Chicago Association of Black Journalists (CABJ).
