Derrick Rose is an American journalist working at WISN-TV as the Lead Investigative reporter and Evening news anchor in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He has been working with the network since August 2018. Previously, he worked as an Investigative reporter and Morning anchor at WHAS-TV in Louisville, Kentucky. Before that, Derrick was hired as an anchor and reporter at WBTV-TV 3 in Charlotte, North Carolina. He has also worked as an Investigative reporter and anchor at WAVY-TV in Norfolk.

Derrick is an American journalist working at WISN-TV as the Lead Investigative reporter and Evening news anchor in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He started working at WISN 12 News in August 2018, the day after his birthday. Six months later, Derrick was promoted to launch and co-host the show on what is now the True Crime Network at 9:00 p.m. alongside Chief Meteorologist Mark Baden and Big 12 Sports Director Dan Needles. In April 2022, he launched and started anchoring 12 News at 4:00 p.m. on weekdays, alongside fellow Louisville alum Kristin Pierce.

In addition, Derrick serves as the chief investigative reporter for 12 News Investigates, the station’s flagship investigative unit that looks into allegations of misconduct, corruption, and waste in addition to holding public leaders accountable. Derrick has won two regional Emmys throughout his tenure at WISN 12. His first Emmy came from presenting a dinner table discussion on Project CommUNITY: Split State. A WISN 12 News special in which he facilitated a conversation between a number of strangers about the subjects and frequently uncomfortable issues that divide Wisconsinites. Derrick’s most recent Emmy was given to him in recognition of his cooperative field reporting during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Derrick began his journalism career while attending Townson University. He was recruited as an intern at WBAL-TV, a sister station to WISN 12 News under Hearst Television. This laid the foundation for his admiration and approach to collaborating with photojournalists. His first paid on-air job came as he moved 1000 miles away from home to work at WABG-TV in Greenville. However, his career officially began with Baltimore’s WMJF-TV, an FCC-licensed television station run by Towson University.

WJTV-TV

In October 2004, Derrick was hired as an anchor and reporter at WJTV-TV,  the CBS affiliate in Jackson, Mississippi. He claims to have told some of his most memorable stories during his tenure at WJTV. Derrick was the first television reporter in the nation to report on the arrest of Edgar Ray Killen, a suspected Ku Klux Klansman, in 2005. Killen was responsible for the 1964 killings of three civil rights activists in Philadelphia, Mississippi. In addition, In Philadelphia that summer, with Derrick serving on the front lines, the country witnessed a jury convict Killen precisely 41 years to the day of the killings.

Additionally, after two months, Derric found himself at the Emergency Management Headquarters of Mississippi alongside state officials as they were preparing for, responding to, and recovering from Hurricane Katrina. Derrick was selected Journalist of the Year by the Association of Black Journalists of Jackson, a local chapter of the National Association of Black Journalists, shortly before he left Jackson.

WAVY-TV

In  February 2007, Derrick joined WAVY-TV, the NBC/FOX duopoly in Norfolk, Virginia. While working at WAVY-TV, Derrick said he truly came to understand the value of identifying appealing personalities and skillfully combining words and images to tell their stories. It was there that Derrick received his first regional Emmy nomination for live reporting and storytelling. It was given to him by the National Association of Television Arts & Sciences for two consecutive years.

In 2007, Derrick assisted WAVY-TV in breaking multiple stories and spearheading national coverage of the federal dogfighting probe into Virginia native Michael Vick. Derrick worked with the team that won an Emmy Award the next year when WAVY covered a tornado that destroyed Suffolk, Virginia. Additionally, Derrick emphasizes that the creativity and vision of a tremendously gifted group of WAVY photographers were essential to their success. That was the group from which the nationally acclaimed group “Storytellers” was formed.

WBTV-TV

In March 2010, Derrick was hired at WBTV-TV 3 in Charlotte, as an enterprise reporter for WBTV News this morning. Derrick received the North Carolina Associated Press’s “Rookie of the Year” award for his first year at WBTV. Additionally, during his stay in Charlotte, Derrick broke the terrible story of the recovery of the body of Phylicia Barnes. Phylicia was a teenage girl from Charlotte who vanished and was killed while visiting family in Baltimore.

Phylicia’s disappearance made headlines across the country. Russell Barnes, Phylicia’s father, and Derrick grew close over time. Derrick frequently wears a purple tie on Tuesdays as a tribute to Phylicia and her father because of that relationship and after discovering that Phylicia loved the color purple.

WMPI-TV

In October 2012, Derrick moved to Mobile, Alabama, where he spent two years covering stories throughout the Alabama Gulf Coast for the NBC affiliate, WMPI-TV. He worked as a main reporter for the late evening news and the Saturday evening anchor.

WHAS-TV

In March 2015, Derrick was hired at WHAS 11 News, the ABC affiliate in Louisville, Kentucky. He began as a weekend anchor before being elevated to morning anchor. Derrick concluded his tenure in Louisville, working in the station’s investigations unit.

His investigation into an unresolved rape case revealed deceptive remarks made by a detective to a victim regarding untested evidence. Thereafter, the instance prompted the Attorney General to evaluate the situation and resulted in a federal lawsuit. Derrick ultimately attributes his success and talent to his faith in God.
