Ernesto Romero Career

Romero joined the KYMA news team as a producer in June of 2009. He became the Managing Editor of KYMA in 2011 and was promoted to News Director in 2013. Romero is the proud recipient of the 2019 Emmy award for News 11’s Early Edition: Crisis on the Border, profiling members of the 2018 migrant caravan. Ernesto and his team also won another Emmy in 2020 for best small market newscast in the region.

Romero as well as several other members of the KYMA staff also received a Mark Twain award by the Associated Press for “Best Coverage of an Ongoing Story” for the Easter Sunday Earthquake in 2010. Ernesto has also lead the news staff to win several other awards, including Yuma’s Best.

He started his journalism career while attending The University of Arizona. He was a fashion editor of the U of A’s first magazine, Red/Blue. From there Ernesto went on to cover the entertainment beat for The Arizona Daily Wildcat. It wasn’t long before he became assistant Spanish editor for El Independiente, a newspaper tending to the issues of the Hispanic community in South Tucson. Romero also helped start the National Association of Hispanic Journalists U of A chapter in 2006.
