The family later relocated to Butler County at Greenville when he was a child. Unfortunately, his father left him and his mother when he was 7 years old. Later they relocated to Tuscaloosa, just after Spann had commenced his fourth-grade classes. The relocation was the aim of his mother to complete her education at the University of Alabama and become a schoolteacher.

Spann got married to his beautiful wife Karen Spann on June 6, 1981. Coincidentally, the two exchanged their vows on Spann’s birthday. Karen is a rush counselor who shares similar efforts and beliefs toward her work as her husband. The duo has been together for more than four decades now. Currently, they reside in Bermingham, Alabama and they enjoy spending time with their grandkid.

The award was due to his tireless efforts to engage and advance the public’s awareness of the science of meteorology in severe weather forecasting and response.

There he was to represent the outstanding achievement in the broadcast industry spanning at least 25 years with a proven record of community involvement and mentoring. He was also named 2019 the National Weatherperson of the Year by The Federal Alliance for Safe Homes (FLASH). Additionally, Spann was one of the first weather anchors nationwide from the American Meteorological Society to earn “Certified Broadcast Meteorologist” status.
He also was awarded by the National Weather Association the Seal of Approval. He was also inducted into the University of Alabama School of Communication Hall of Fame and the Theta Tau professional engineering fraternity Alumni Hall of Fame. He also tenures at the Board of Grandview Medical Center as the Chairman and also as a proud member of the University of Alabama College of Communication and Information Sciences Board of Visitors. During his leisure time, he loves amateur radio and tennis. At the age of 14, he was accorded the first ham radio license where he later earned an extra class license.
