Additionally, he serves as a 15-time Emmy-awarded journalist. In April 2016, he began serving at the station’s anchor desk to relaunch the station’s morning newscast, after distinguishing himself with his memorable broadcast of Pope Francis’ visit to Philadelphia in 2015. Moreover, he’s still accountable for the consumer beat where he and his team continue to settle thousands of consumer-related complaints from the Delaware Valley’s audience.
Through their work, they garnered accolades from many organizations such as the Better Business Bureau and the Associated Press. Nonetheless, his career debuted when he served in Secaucus, New Jersey at WWOR as a news department intern. For 6 years, he served in various roles at the station. For instance, news writer and Emmy-nominated field producer.
All this he did while this serving in the aviation industry. In the mid-1980s, People Express Airlines employed him when he was still in college. Later, he went on to serve Continental Airlines following an airline merger, as a domestic and international flight attendant. While serving as a flight attendant, he traveled to diverse destinations such as London and Tahiti.
In 1993, Donovan clipped his airline wings and concentrate on his broadcasting career full-time. He went on to serve WNBC-TV, the NBC flagship station in New York City, as a research coordinator. He put his aviation experience to good use during his stint there. Also, he attained his initial Emmy Award for an investigative report on plane crash survival.
In 1994, he switched to TV and went on to serve NBC’s cable business network, CNBC, as an investigative producer and consumer reporter for “Steals & Deals,” a nightly consumer news show. At CNBC, he developed his passion for consumer advocacy. His work there attained him a National Cable Ace nomination. Also, he contributed reports for NBC’s Today Show.
In 1997, he went on to serve Fox television station in High Point, North Carolina, WGHP in the investigative unit. During his stint there, the Better Business Bureau dubbed him “Outstanding Consumer Reporter.” However, his most popular reports at WGHP involved a weekly beat where he assisted reunite people with unidentified funds.
Over the course of one year, he assisted return $1.4 million dollars to the audience that was owed money by the North Carolina unclaimed property program. In 2000, he was employed by, the CBS affiliate in Columbus, Ohio, WBNS as the station’s lead consumer reporter. Further, he attained an Emmy Award and an additional five Emmy nominations for his consumer reporting and investigations.
His advocacy on behalf of his viewers was acknowledged by the Ohio Attorney General’s Office. Annually, he and his time assist solve thousands of consumer-associated complaints from the Delaware Valley audience. Through his work with KYW, he has garnered 13 Emmy Awards and an additional 20 Emmy nominations.
During the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, he developed a fundraising phone bank where CBS 3 viewers donated over $1 million in the course of two days to help with the Red Cross relief endeavors. Donovan’s active in the community where he serves as a volunteer at many local charities. For instance, MANNA, CARIE and the Mazzoni Center.
The Broadcast Pioneers of Philadelphia inducted him into their Hall of Fame in acknowledgment of his body of community and work service in 2015. When he is not working, he loves traveling the world. On a side note, his passport counts stamps from 44 countries in Europe, South America, Africa, Asia, and the South Pacific. If he’s not traveling, he lives in Gloucester County, New Jersey.
