Morales works for WTVJ as a hurricane specialist under contract since May 2009. He has served the station for over a decade. Moreover, he has navigated through hurricanes Irene, Andrew, Wilma, Katrina, and Irma. As a result of his life-rescuing through the 2017 season, earned recognition with the John Coleman Broadcast Award at the National Tropical Weather Conference.
Subsequent to his graduation from Cornell University, he served the U.S. National Weather Service as a civil servant. Within this, he became a Lead Forecaster in Puerto Rico prior to tackling a position as Chief of the South American Desk at the National Center for Environmental Predictions in Washington D.C.
Nonetheless, he debuted his TV job when he served the Univision Network and its Miami station, WLTV-TV channel 23 as Chief Meteorologist from 1991 through 2002. Further, he served WSCV-TV, and Telemundo 51 as a chief meteorologist from 2003 to 2008.
While serving Telemundo 51, he became the key Latino to serve as a fill-in meteorologist on NBC’s Weekend Today show and did so multiple times. In 2009 he went on to serve the NBC’s Miami station WTVJ NBC-6 as chief meteorologist.
Also, he was voted to be a Fellow of the American Meteorological Society (AMS). In addition, he gained the 2007 AMS Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Advance of Applied Meteorology. To boot, he holds the AMS and National Weather Association Seal of Approval for Radio and TV weather casting. Else, the AMS and National Weather Association rewarded him.
Further, the AMS has a Certified Consulting Meteorologist and a Certified Broadcast Meteorologist accredit him. Morales gained three regional Emmy Awards where one at each station he has worked in. Of late, he gained the Silver Circle Award for the quality of his contributions to television.
Moreover, in 1997 he partook in Vice President Al Gore’s White House conference on global warming and climate change. He rejoined the White House at the invitation of President Barack Obama in 2014 for the issue of the Third National Climate Assessment.
Twice, he was nominated to National Academies of Sciences (NAS) committees, co-authoring studies in 2012 and 2017 relevant to America’s Weather Enterprise. Also, he wrote Huracanes, which is a Spanish-language reference book on hurricanes in 2000.
Additionally, he volunteers extensively from the board of directors’ participation in various South Florida non-profits to mentoring young scientists. Also, he piloted for Angel Flight Southeast which is an organization that supplies free flights so children and adults can access far-from-home doctors.
