Simpson became a BBC reporter in 1970. Earlier in his career, then-Prime Minister Harold Wilson, angered by the question of whether he would call an election, punched Simpson in the stomach. Simpson served as the BBC’s political editor from 1980 to 1981. In 1981-82 he presented the Nine O’Clock News and in 1982 became diplomatic editor. Simpson was also a correspondent in South Africa, Brussels and Dublin. In 1988 he became the BBC’s World Politics Editor and occasionally presented the current show Simpson’s World.
In 2008 and 2009 Simpson appeared on the BBC’s Top Dogs: Adventures in War, Sea and Ice program. Simpson teamed up with the British Sir Ranulph Fiennes, an adventurer, and Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, a circumnavigator. In 2016, Simpson presented the panoramic special, John Simpson: 50 Years on the Frontlines, in which he revisits the people and places that have most influenced him and shares his thoughts on the challenges ahead.
