His interest in weather was “sparked” by his fear of thunderstorms as a small child. He followed the two weather gurus of West Michigan, Craig James, and Bill Steffen, religiously, so he knew exactly when storms were coming. He could never have imagined being fortunate enough to work with them.

Before starting his professional career, Matt held a number of jobs, such as working at the Meijer warehouse, renting Ryder trucks, driving camel rides at the John Ball Zoo, and delivering newspapers for the Grand Rapids Press. Working in these positions helped Matt pay for his education at Grand Rapids Community College, Western Michigan University, Grand Valley State University, and ultimately Central Michigan University, where he graduated with a degree in meteorology.

After deciding to pursue a career in broadcasting, Matt completed two internships: one at WNEM-TV in Saginaw and one at the Muskegon office of the National Weather Service. His first paying job was at WPBN-TV/WTOM-TV in Traverse City, Michigan, first doing weekend newscasts and subsequently the weekday morning show. Matt spends his leisure time weightlifting, golfing, and coaching his children in a variety of sports. A vehicle enthusiast, he enjoys taking his son to car shows. Winter is one of his favorite seasons since it lets him indulge in his love of skiing and snowmobiling.
