Nelson joined Denver7 in June 2004 as Chief Meteorologist. He has been a television weather forecaster for 40 years, 25 of which have been spent alone forecasting the weather in Colorado. He began his career in 1976 at Weather Central, a private weather consulting firm based in Madison that provided forecasts for ski resorts, agribusiness, power utilities, the Wisconsin TV Network, and more than 40 other national radio and television stations.

In 1979, Nelson was made Executive Vice President of Weather Central, where he oversaw 14 meteorologists. Mike contributed to the production of forecasts that were essential to the Trans-Alaska Pipeline’s construction. Together with fellow meteorologist Terry Kelly, Nelson created one of the first computer weather graphics systems for television while they were in Madison.

Nelson put TV weather computers in over 50 television stations all over the country from 1979 to 1984. In 1982, he brought Colorado’s first weather computer and taught legendary Denver weatherman Stormy Rottman how to use it. Mike and his family moved to St. Louis, Missouri, in 1985. From 1985 to 1991, he was the Chief Meteorologist at a local station.

Mike was a member of the Board of Broadcast Meteorology of the American Meteorological Society while he was in St. Louis. This group approved candidates for the AMS Seal of Approval for Television Weather-casting. Mike has won 18 Outstanding Weather Anchor Emmys. He was named “Citizen of the Year” by the Colorado Broadcasters Association in 2001 for his volunteer work in Colorado schools.

Mike visits over fifty clubs, schools, and service organizations annually to enjoy sharing his meteorological expertise with children and adults alike. The performance of his Tornado Dance is one to remember! Mike has addressed more than 750,000 students during his career.
