Marshall did establish herself as a foreign television news correspondent in the 1980s and 1990s while living in Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union. In March 2014 she was appointed Education Editor for the BBC but left the post after being diagnosed with breast cancer. Penny has presented and authored documentaries for BBC Radio 4 and was awarded an honorary doctorate from City University in January 2015. He has written for The Times, The Guardian, and The Daily Mail.
