Bird has been a co-anchor of 2News for 33 years and declares that he is the happiest guy in the world to be living my goal at KUTV. His desire to be a broadcaster spiked even in first grade and hence had a laser-like focus on that aim. He always wanted to work at KUTV and watched the Salt Lake City news on cable television.
Ron has covered many of the significant stories that have affected Utah while working at KUTV. He was on the air when a tornado tore through downtown Salt Lake City with longtime co-anchor Mary Nickles. On September 11, 2001, Ron and Mary started KUTV’s 24-hour local coverage. Then, in March 2020, while Ron and Mary were broadcasting, a 5.7 earthquake shook Salt Lake. Entering in an emergency mode enabled the team to provide continuous coverage that led to an Emmy nomination.
Ron definitely enjoys reading the ordinary stories as well as the major ones. His impromptu “Ron on the Run” segment profiles individuals and situations that are typically overlooked but would make for compelling stories. Ron has excellently covered cops and crime, as well as elections in-depth pieces on Utah’s contemporary pioneers for many years. Ron cites his experience riding in an F-16 with the Air Force Thunderbirds as one of his highlights.
Aside from reporting news, Ron has coached AAU youth basketball for more than 20 years, enjoys working out, plays the guitar occasionally, works on house and yard projects, and is currently learning pickleball. Ron chuckles, “We’ll see how that goes.
