On the 5, 6, and 10 p.m. newscasts, Monday through Friday, Sterling can be seen as the Chief Meteorologist for 2News. Further, he spent a three-year term on the Board of Broadcast Meteorologists. June 2000 saw him preside over the AMS Broadcaster’s Conference in San Francisco.
In addition to providing aviation predictions in support of Air Force and Department of Defense activities around the world, he was a Severe Storms Forecaster working out of the Air Force Global Weather Center. In 1970–1971, he completed a thirteen-month tour of duty in Vietnam. He presently serves as the “Voice of the Utah National Guard” and is a member of the Utah Air National Guard. He is likewise assigned to the State Headquarters Public Affairs team. In 1985, Sterling joined KSL television in Salt Lake City as a weather producer and meteorologist, launching his broadcast career.
When not at 2News, Sterling serves as the founder and music director of The Choral Arts Society of Utah, directing up to six concerts annually with the 120-voice choir. He serves as the Days of ’47 Pops Concert’s music director and executive vice president. Additionally, he leads the board of the Utah West Valley Symphony and serves on the board of the Clark Planetarium. He participates in community activities in his own time and gives presentations to groups and schools on the television industry, the weather, and music.
