Spicer made several divisive and inaccurate public remarks while serving as press secretary for the White House. He also had a tense working relationship with the press corps. The first time this happened was on January 21, 2017, the day after Trump was sworn in. Spicer repeated the claim that there were record-breaking numbers during Trump’s inauguration ceremony and that the media had purposefully underestimated the attendance. Following widespread criticism of this claim, Trump advisor Kellyanne Conway said that Spicer had provided “alternative facts” about the number of people who attended the inauguration.

On July 21, 2017, Spicer announced his resignation as press secretary of the White House, but he stayed on until August 31 in an unspecified position.
