Wendell is an American journalist working as a weather and sports news anchor at WTVO Channel 17 News in Rockford. He solo anchors the 9 p.m. on FOX 39 and co-anchors the 5, 6, and 10 p.m. news on WTVO 17. Wendell began his broadcasting career as a reporter and fill-in anchor at WOOD TV 8 in Austin, Texas. After that, he was hired in the same capacity at KHOU-TV in Houston, Texas.
Wendell then joined ABC 3340 in Birmingham, Alabama as the weekday morning anchor. Before moving to Rockford, he worked as a morning anchor at WFSB TV in Rocky Hill, Connecticut. Wendell has also worked for stations in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and Columbia, South Carolina. His investigative reporting piece “School Safety Under Fire” in Oklahoma earned him the 2009 OAB Award for Investigative Reporting. The National Association of Black Journalists honored him with a Salute to Excellence Award in 2008 and 2010 for his labor.
Additionally, in October 2005, Wendell was given the ACU Journalism Alumni “Gutenberg Award.” The Alabama Associated Press Media Editors awarded him second place for Best News Anchor in 2016. Moreover, he was honored with an Abby Award in 2019 for his “School Patrol” series in Alabama. Wendell supports literacy and writing, enjoys watching vintage films, and cheers on the Texas Longhorns in college football and the North Carolina Tar Heels in basketball.
