Alex Witt Sued By Bestfriend
A lawsuit claims that despite signing a $200,000-per-year contract with MSNBC, a weekend anchor failed to repay a $65,000 loan to her best friend. It is claimed that Alex Witt spent a lot of money on a trip to Barcelona and purchased a Porsche 911, but he did not have enough money to give Stephanie Jones her money. Witt allegedly agreed to repay $500 per month, but he has only delivered $1,375 thus far.
Ms. Jones agreed to lend Witt the money in December 2009, when she was struggling financially, according to the lawsuit. The 49-year-old blonde revealed to Ms. Jones that she was waiting for a new contract from MSNBC and that her husband, TV producer Bill Sorensen, was out of work. Witt was also said to be in a lot of debt on her credit cards and would soon face a “sizeable penalty” for leaving her Westchester, New York, condo.
Witt was so poor that she was unable to even take her daughter Caroline on a trip to Scotland for her school. She received a check for $65,000 with 7.5% interest right away from Jones, 49, a successful Manhattan lawyer. Ms. Jones asserts that Witt then “fell off the page of the Earth.” I had no idea that lending her money would be problematic. In the past, she has reimbursed me.
It is simply a very sad situation. In a series of emails, Witt thanked Ms. Jones for the bailout and provided several examples of the “strained living” she had to endure due to a lack of funds. One sent in February of last year mentioned “not being able to afford new clothes for me” in a profession where appearance is everything. In a subsequent email, she wrote, “Your money went to the housing debacle with the move,” adding that it also paid for Caroline’s trip to Scotland.
The money was also used to pay off a credit card she used to pay for Caroline’s education and Charlie’s education at college. According to the lawsuit, the last time Witt talked to her was last summer, when she was about to sign a $200,000-per-year contract with MSNBC. Ms. Jones tried to get the money back by going to court after it became clear that it was not coming.
She is now filing a lawsuit for the money and unspecified damages, as well as a promise that Witt will never contact her again. Witt was born in Los Angeles. Before joining MSNBC in 1999, he worked at a number of local television stations in California and attended the prestigious Marlborough School for Girls. She has covered the 2000 and 2004 elections, as well as the aftermath of 9/11, and is the weekend morning anchor for Saturdays, Sundays, and occasionally weekdays.
Witt asserts that she no longer owns the Porsche and that her husband briefly resumed employment before becoming unemployed once more. She did not respond to inquiries for comment, but according to the lawsuit, she allegedly stated: I feel sick now.’ Because the last thing I want is for this to be like Damocles’ sword over our heads.
