Walker began her broadcasting career at KMIR-TV in Palm Springs. Amara joined the NBC-owned WTVJ in Miami, Florida in 2005 and served as a news anchor and a general assignment reporter. Walker transferred her roles as a news anchor and a general assignment reporter in July 2012, to the Fox-owned WFLD in Chicago, Illinois since she had moved there with her husband.
However, in December 2013, Walker left the WFLD team and relocated to Atlanta, Georgia, with her husband where she joined CNN International. Therefore, she now co-anchors CNN Today with Michael Holmes as of November 2014. Walker went on air in March 2021 and was reported to have been the victim of anti-Asian insults and in February 2022, she successfully published an opinion piece concerning violence against Asian-American women.
