Asthana worked The Observer as a Generalist since 2003 and spent several months at the Washington Post in 2006 on a Laurence Stern Fellowship. Asthana left the Guardian in 2021 to join ITV News as deputy political editor Robert Peston. She was then linked to the vacant position of political editor at the BBC, although she ultimately stayed with ITV.
