Ashleigh Banfield is a Canadian American journalist working at NewsNation as the host of Banfield reports since joining the network in January 2021. Previously, she worked at CNN as the host of Legal View with Ashleigh Banfield and Early Start. Before that, she was employed at Court TV as the host of the true crime documentary series Judgment with Ashleigh Banfield. Banfield also worked at KDFW-TV as the host of News 4 Texas Daybreak.
Ashleigh was born and raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. From there she went to Balmoral Hall School, a private university preparatory school in Winnipeg. She then joined Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario, in 1988, where she obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science and French. She continued her studies in French at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, British Columbia, where she graduated in 1992. Banfield took home two Iris Awards in the Best News Documentary and Best of Festival categories in 1994.

Banfield is a Canadian American journalist working at NewsNation as the host of Banfield since joining the network in January 2021. She started her career in 1988 at CKY-TV in Winnipeg and CJBN-TV in Kenora, Ontario. She was the weekend news anchor for Edmonton’s CFRN-TV from 1989 to 1992. From 1992 to 1993, she was a producer at CICT-TV in Calgary. From 1993 to 1995, she was the station’s evening news anchor and business correspondent. Banfield took home two 1994 Iris Awards in the Best News Documentary and Best of Festival categories.
While Banfield was employed by CICT-TV, she worked as a freelance associate producer for ABC’s World News Tonight. She reported from Moscow on the Bush-Gorbachev summit in 1991 and Vancouver on the Clinton-Yeltsin summit in April 1993. She joined KDFW in the mid-1990s, hosting News 4 Texas Daybreak at first, then co-hosting the show with Steve Eager at 5:00 and 9:00. After winning an Emmy for her reporting at Dallas broadcast station KDFW-TV, Banfield was hired by national cable network MSNBC in 2000.
In 2005, Banfield was hired at Court TV, which later became TruTV. She co-hosted the trial coverage program Banfield & Ford: Courtside with Jack Ford on weekdays from 1 to 3 PM ET. Banfield replaced Lisa Bloom as anchor of the Open Court series on June 1, 2009, weekdays from 9 to 11 a.m. ET on truTV. Reporting on the Casey Anthony trial was her final major assignment with the network.

In January 2012, Banfield joined CNN as co-anchor of the network’s morning program, Early Start, with Zoraida Sambolin. On August 13, 2012, she took over as host of CNN Newsroom’s 11 a.m. segment every weekday in New York, taking Kyra Phillips’ place. In 2020, she returned to hosting Court TV shows, such as the real crime documentary series Judgment. She joined NewsNation in January 2021 as the host of Banfield taking over NewsNation Prime’s third hour on NewsNation.
