Plett graduated from Carleton University in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, in 1991 with a bachelor’s degree in journalism.
Plett joined the BBC as a freelance writer from Cairo in 1995 and was its Middle East correspondent until 2000. She then covered the death of Syrian President Hafez al-Assad in 2000 and a series of reports during the 2002 siege of Ramallah. Her career took her to Iraq in 2003. Plett Usher worked as a BBC correspondent in Jerusalem before moving to Islamabad in 2009. Correspondent since at least 2012.
During the BBC’s From Our Own Correspondent on September 30, 2004, Plett Usher said he cried when he saw the terminally ill Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat being taken to hospital.
