Brandi earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Communication Studies from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas in 2004. She minored in Spanish. She was in the UNLV Honors College. Brandi studied abroad for a semester in Salamanca, Spain, and summer in Barcelona, Spain. Brandi launched and reported an in-depth series called Conversations About Racism and the Road to Equality in 2020. The series included Understanding Racism, The Talk, and Youth Activists & Education. Due to her Special Project/In-depth Series in 2021, her team won a Minnesota Society of Professional Journalists Page One Award.

Brandi Powell Previous experience

Powell was selected to participate in the Prince and Mary Tyler Moore REELZ specials, giving on-air perspectives as a journalist and Minnesotan. Brandi worked as a Reporter/Multi-Media Journalist at KNSD-TV (NBC 7) in San Diego between 2011-2013. While there she covered breaking news, crime, and politics. Further, she was a regular on-air contributor for Politically Speaking, the station’s weekly political show.

Between 2008-2009, Brandi worked at News 8 Austin (now Spectrum News -Time Warner Cable) as a Reporter/Video Journalist/Bell County Bureau Chief. She excellently covered Fort Hood and its surrounding communities.

Powell started her career in broadcasting behind the scenes as Production Assistant at MSNBC, from 2005-2006. Later, appeared first time on air as a Political Reporter at KFYR-TV (NBC Affiliate) in Bismarck, North Dakota. She covered statewide elections and legislative sessions from 2006-2008. Brandi traveled to Guatemala for nearly two weeks.

This is where she covered elections, agriculture, and education as she followed a group of North Dakota teachers doing an intercultural exchange. Powel Interned at The Washington Center, for the 2004 Republican National Convention in New York City and also at Dateline NBC in 2004.

Brandi actively participates as a member of the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) and Twin Cities Black Journalists (TCBJ). Her community involvement is by hosting and emceeing events for a variety of organizations including Urban Ventures, Urban League Twin Cities, and Depart Smart. She excitedly moderates panel discussions. Brandi volunteered weekly at Urban Ventures with its dynamic youth programs in 2019.

Brandi has received multiple team Emmy awards and individual Emmy nominations. Recently, she received an Upper Midwest Emmy nomination for Anchoring in 2020. Her Special Project/In-depth Series in 2021 earned her a Minnesota Society of Professional Journalists Page One Award. Brandi has also won two North Dakota Associated Press awards. She was selected to do a Voice-Over for part of a Shark Week episode In 2014. Brandi was selected as the Keynote Speaker for the Patricia Adams Lecture Series (PALS) at Heidelberg University in Tiffin, OH in 2017,

Powel is originally from  Minnesota. She travels a lot near and far with loved ones, as she likes to experience different cultures. She’s conversational in Spanish. Brandi loves painting & doing all kinds of artwork, and watching movies. She attends live jazz & theater performances and enjoys eating delicious food. Powell is fun of hiking and spends time in her yard with her family. Brandi lives in Minneapolis. She says she hit the jackpot with her husband and their toddler daughter.
