Byron is an American journalist working as a General Assignment and Investigative reporter at WOOD TV8 in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He attended Syracuse University. In his junior year, during the second semester, he worked as an intern for “NBC Nightly News” in Los Angeles. He went back home that summer to work as an intern at NBC10 Boston. After graduating, he started working as a producer and morning anchor at KTTC in Rochester, Minnesota. He reported for the station’s noon program and co-anchored KTTC’s morning news on weekdays from 4:30 to 7 a.m.
During his time at WOOD TV8, Byron has covered around a dozen rallies regarding the police killing of Patrick Lyoya in Grand Rapids in April 2022, conducted interviews with Lyoya’s family, and tracked the murder case against former GRPD officer Chris Schurr for WOOD TV8. Additionally, Byron has heavily covered extreme weather. He reported on the EF3 tornado that hit Gaylord, Michigan in May 2022, speaking with locals and business owners who were left speechless by the unbelievable devastation. Along with covering blizzards and dangerous heat waves during blackouts, he has also covered catastrophic flooding and the Christmas Week Blizzard of 2022, the largest storm to hit Michigan in ten years.
Byron has also concentrated on political reporting during his time at News8. He covered several debates during the GOP primary and general election cycles, campaign rallies, and Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s event in Detroit on election night in 2022 while reporting on Michigan’s gubernatorial election. Byron has also reported from the Michigan State Capitol interviewing legislators and documenting Whitmer’s 2023 State of the State speech. He received a merit award for news reporting in April 2023 from the Michigan Association of Broadcasters.
Byron started collaborating more with the distinguished Target 8 investigation team in 2023. His June 2023 investigation revealed a pattern of Michigan teachers getting hired by new school districts despite being accused of child abuse repeatedly. Byron has also looked at long-standing unresolved cold cases for Target 8. Byron has grown to love West Michigan quite quickly after visiting its stunning beaches, artisan breweries, and other attractions. The chance to collaborate with and pick up knowledge from a group of seasoned journalists is something he expressed his gratitude for. He added that he feels fortunate to live in West Michigan and has encountered a lot of kind people there.
