McShane is an American journalist working at NewsNation as an anchor of NewsNation Now, a news program that airs on NewsNation every weekday afternoon. Connell started his career in sports journalism working as a sports commentator at WFUV while attending Fordham University. He also worked as a Yankees Radio Network intern in 1998. In addition, he covered Pittsfield Mets games as a play-by-play commentator for WBRK.
McShane had originally intended to work as a sports commentator after receiving his degree from Fordham. But in 1999, he started working for Bloomberg Radio as a desk assistant. As a result, in 2000 he was hired by New York City as a local news reporter. Covering the September 11 attacks for WBBR was one of his first significant reporting assignments. Eventually, McShane moved from being a reporter for Bloomberg Radio to becoming a business reporter, covering live news from the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq.
He was chosen to co-anchor with Peter Schacknow the syndicated morning program The First Word. Later on, he started working as an anchor for Bloomberg Television, where he was the host of Marketweek, Evening Edition, and On the Markets. In 2007, Connell started working at Fox Business as a business reporter when it launched. In 2008, he was elevated to co-anchor the network’s early morning show with Jenna Lee.

When Fox started simulcasting Don Imus’ Imus in the Morning in 2009, he joined the team of business reporters. Additionally, McShane once stood in for Charles McCord, who was sick and missed one of the Imus in the Morning remote broadcasts. on May 9, 2011, McShane was named anchor of the show until 2017. In 2010, Dagen McDowell and McShane started co-hosting the 11 a.m. Fox Business Network show Markets Now. He also worked as an ESPN radio play-by-play commentator for the 2013 Pinstripe Bowl.
From 2018 until 2021, McShane co-anchored After the Bell alongside Melissa Francis. In the course of the 2020 US presidential election, McShane provided live reporting from swing states. He announced that he was leaving FOX Business on May 8, 2023, after which he joined NewsNation. He made his debut on the station on September 25, 2023.
