Martin started at CBS News as a researcher in 1969 and in the 1970s and early 1980s his career period was at Newsweek Magazine and the Associated Press. Martin joined CBS News in 1993 as the network’s National Security Correspondent reporting from The Pentagon. He served in the CBS 60 minutes, and 48 hours Evening News. Besides, he is a journalist and an author.

He became a CBS News Pentagon correspondent in 1983 and worked as a naval officer during the Vietnam War. David was positioned as the “big picture” reporter for CBS News during the invasion of Afghanistan and the war in Iraq where he explained and assessed the military’s strategies and operations for viewers.

Martin reported on stories before and during the Iraq war and the story of the military’s “shock and awe” strategy for its initial strike on Baghdad. Besides, he reported on Dora Farms, where Saddam was said by the CIA to have been hiding on the opening night of the war.

David is a multi-Emmy award winner most recently in 2012 for his story “Starting Over.” Also, he won awards from Alfred I. DuPont-Columbia University(2002 and 2004) for his work  seen on the “CBS Evening News” and “60 Minutes Wednesday.” He was also awarded the 2004 Joan S. Barone Award for excellence in Washington-based national affairs and public policy reporting awarded by the Washington Radio & Television Correspondents’ Association.

Additionally, he has written two books, “Wilderness of Mirrors” (Harper & Row, 1980), an account of the secret wars between the CIA and KGB, and “Best Laid Plans: The Inside Story of America’s War Against Terrorism” (Harper & Row, 1988).
