Mates began at ITN in 1983 as an editorial intern and two years later, he was appointed to the ITV editorial board as a writer. In 1986 he was appointed ITN spokesman general. One of his first assignments as a reporter was to cover the Zeebrugge ferry accident. In 1 she spent five weeks in Zeebrugge in a salvage operation of the capsized ferry Herald of Free Enterprise. Another important task was to document Patrick Ryan’s father’s failed extradition attempt from the Republic of Ireland to Britain in 1989.The failure was attributed to damaging comments in Parliament by his father, Lieutenant Colonel Michael Mates MP, who suggested Ryan was a terrorist.

Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher compounded the damage caused by Mates’ comments on the November 29, 1988 PMQ. In October 1989, the Irish government refused an extradition request on the grounds that Ryan would not receive a fair trial in Britain. Mates was a Washington correspondent from 1997 to 2001. 2001 he was appointed senior correspondent for ITV News. 2001, Mates played a key role in ITV News’ coverage of the 9/11 attacks, which covered New York and Washington. In January 2012, Mates became ‘Europe Editor’ for ITV News, focusing on the future of the EU and what it means for the UK. Since 2016, Mates has continued to work as Europe Editor, appears regularly on ITV Weekend News and is an occasional presenter on ITV Lunchtime News and ITV Evening News.
