Jennifer Hammond Career
Jennifer is an Emmy award-winning journalist working as a Sports reporter at WJBK/FOX 2 News in Detroit Michigan. Her father gave her a microphone (along with a tape recorder) when she was five years old. Amid the chitchat and banter, which was primarily intended to amuse her shy older sister, she confidently said, “Hello Sports fans!” It’s amazing to think that even back then she knew where her future would take her.
By the time Jennifer reached junior high school typing out lineups and watching Monday night football, there was no turning back. Being a sports reporter on TV was the only job she could envision for herself. Her mind was set, but the path there wasn’t nearly as easy. Her first experience on camera came broadcasting the morning announcements at her childhood school, Seaholm High School in Birmingham. When she arrived at Western Michigan University, she had secured a lucrative position in the Sports Information Department. She covered everything from women’s gymnastics to football. Although it didn’t significantly improve her sports resume, working full-time at radio stations WQLR/WQSN while attending college did boost her on-air product.
Jennifer is more determined than ever to give you, the Fox 2 viewers, engaging and educational stories. She hopes to cover a Lions Super Bowl one day! She’s still determined to help this amazing community and provide guidance to tomorrow’s broadcasters in the interim!
Jennifer Hammond CLTV
Six months after graduating, Jennifer took a risk and relocated to Chicago, where she worked as a receptionist for an audio production company. She could network with industry professionals and improve her audition tape. She finally got a break in radio less than a year later having been given the chance to try out for Shadow Traffic after two weeks of unpaid training. With no assurances about a job at all, she landed a full-time job at the end. After nearly three years, that job led to another on-camera opportunity at CLTV in Oakbrook, Illinois. There, she worked at the key wall doing morning traffic reports. After the morning sports anchor said she wasn’t hip to cover the sports, Jennifer took over and at last returned to doing what she loved most.
When Detroit’s first all-sports talk station was about to launch, in the late spring of 1994, she found herself at a crossroads. She was determined not to let the opportunity pass and at the same time eager to take the next step as a sports reporter working in the field. Jennifer was employed immediately after spending a few days driving home and calling Program Director Lorna Gladstone at the Fan to schedule a meeting. After covering every Detroit sports team for three years, including the Lions, Tigers, MSU, UM, football, and basketball, Jennifer was hired as a freelancer by Fox 2 to cover the Lions pregame and Red Wings Stanley Cup runs.
Jennifer Hammond FOX 2
A change in Fox 2 management in November 1997 landed Jennifer a full-time job as number three in the sports department, where she would cover everything from the College World Series to the NFL. It’s amazing to think that over twenty years have passed since she started her dream job, and it only gets better. As a sports reporter, Jennifer has been recognized with two Emmy awards, among many other incredible experiences. She says that the continuous response and connection with viewers and Detroit sports lovers, which make this job so fulfilling, is even more precious.
