Joey is an American journalist working as a morning meteorologist at WTVO Channel 17 News in Rockford, Illinois. He comes to Rockford from the small town of Effort, PA. Joey fell in love with the weather at the age of seven after he started watching Storm Stories and his favorite meteorologist, Jim Cantore, on the Weather Channel. Then an EF-2 tornado struck the Poconos, just 15 minutes from his home, on his birthday in 2009. Until today, he claims that that was Mother Nature telling him that meteorology was going to be his life.
Joey received his meteorology degree from Millersville University. During his time there, he served as a Lead Forecaster and Streaming Video Forecaster for Campus Weather Service. He worked as an intern for the News 8 Storm Team at WGAL in 2016. He also started a storm pursuit squad named Echo Top Storm Chasers with a few colleagues. He and the team traveled to Tornado Alley in the spring of 2016 to witness the worst of the severe weather. They had 17 tornadoes in all, including the enormous EF-4 wedge tornado that struck Chapman, Kansas. Every time Mother Nature offers a chance for a storm chase, Joey gathers his equipment and hits the road.
Joey likes to travel, go hiking, and spend time in the great outdoors when he’s not working at the weather center. He particularly loves taking long trips with his fiancée Gina and their puppy “child,” Kasey. Additionally, he is an avid fan of the Dallas Cowboys, Kansas City Chiefs, and New York Yankees.
