Pruitt works as a political analyst and on special projects for WSB since retiring from the anchor desk in 2010 at WSB. He has broadcasted for Georgia for 46 years since 1964. At the end of 2022, he will mark his 58th year in TV journalism. After college, he first worked as a reporter and a cameraman whereby he broadcasted major civil rights around the South.
Between the years 1965 and 1967, he served as an infantry deputy in the U.S. Army in Seoul, South Korea, and Fort Gordon, Georgia. In 1967, he returned to WSB as a reporter. Later, he became the weekend anchor for WSB. Later in 1973, he worked as the anchor of the 6 and 11 p.m. news.
Further, in 1978, he served WXIA-TV as an evening news anchor. Later, he returned to WSB as an anchor for the 6 and 11 p.m. news in 1994. Additionally, on the 7th of July 2010, he aired on-screen at 11 p.m. for the last time at WSB, therefore, closing his 41-year run as a late news anchor.
Also, he has amassed many prizes for his anchoring and reporting. For example, he has gained 10 Emmys, counting ‘Best Male Anchor’ and ‘Best Documentary’ and 5 Sigma Delta Chi Quill Awards. Second, he won the UPI Award for his broadcast of Jimmy Carter’s presidential crusade and of a north Georgia airliner crash. Further, he has received the Georgia Award for Public Service and Father of the Year. Also, he gained the Pioneer Broadcaster Award which he received from the University of Georgia journalism school. In addition, he got the Silver Circle Award from the National Academy of Radio Arts and Sciences.
On top of this, he has also been awarded an Honorary Doctorate Degree in Public Service from Presbyterian College in 2004. Also, he gained the ‘Distinguished Achievement in Broadcasting Award’ from DiGammaKappa at the University of Georgia School of Journalism in 2006.
Moreover, he was initiated into the Atlanta Press Club Hall of Fame and the Georgia Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame. Farmer has done many popular stories such as the funeral of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the 1968 kidnapping of heiress Barbara Jane Mackle, and the aftermath of the September 11th attack on the World Trade Center just to list a few. Last but not least, he works on the boards of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF). Also, he works for The Nature Conservancy of Georgia.
