Karl Schmid HIV

In addition to being well-known for hosting coverage of the Oscars and other red-carpet events in Hollywood, Schmid made headlines all over the world when he revealed his HIV status in a sincere Facebook post. Thankfully, Schmid’s tale is very different. He wrote about his HIV status in a Facebook post in March 2018, despite having been diagnosed with the virus ten years earlier.

He says that his disclosure happened “very organically.” “I’m just like you,” Schmid wrote in a sincere message. I want to be loved and accepted, and I have a big heart. Even though I occasionally appear on television, I’m just a regular guy who wants what we all want. to be loved and accepted by our family and friends, as well as to be encouraged by our peers.

During his return trip to Australia, Schmid sat down with Emen8 to talk about living with HIV, disclosure, stigma, and how keeping an undetectable viral load prevents HIV from being transmitted through sex even when condoms aren’t used.

When it comes to making the personal decision to disclose one’s HIV status, Schmid’s story emphasizes the importance of being able to talk about the disease and the advantages of peer visibility. The HIV Disclosure Project is a resource made to help HIV-positive people learn from their peers’ experiences about how to disclose their status.

People from all over the world share their experiences of what disclosure means to them through candid stories of resilience. There are organizations and community groups that can assist you if you think you would benefit from speaking with someone, whether it be because you are concerned about getting HIV, how to avoid it, or even if you have been diagnosed with HIV.

A good place to start is with a doctor or sexual health center. You can also send us a message at Emen8 via our contact form or Facebook page. Alternatively, get in touch with the state or territory-based HIV/AIDS organization. Online communities for HIV-positive individuals and PrEP-using individuals can also provide assistance.
