She attended California State University, Long Beach. During her time there, she held the position of Vice President for the Cal State Long Beach Chapter of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists. She participated in the student-run program Beach News and wrote for The Daily 49er, the school newspaper. She was one of the founding members of the NAHJ PNW- Seattle Chapter during her two years in the Pacific Northwest.
Karla began her career in television at KWHY-TV, serving as a programming coordinator assistant. She was then hired as a news assistant at KABC-TV in Los Angeles. After that, she moved to Yakima, Washington, and landed a job as a reporter at KAPP-KVEW. During her tenure there, she covered breaking news, court cases, and missing and murdered Indigenous women. She also worked for WHBF-TV in the Quad Cities, where she was honored with an award by LULAC 5285 for Outstanding Reporting and Significant Contribution to the Quad Cities Communities.
Karla worked at KRQE News 13 in Albuquerque, New Mexico, before relocating to Colorado Springs. She reported in the morning and on the dayside. She covered court cases, community events, and animal abuse stories while she was there. Karla enjoys hiking with Frida, her rescue dog, when she’s not reporting. She got to know her puppy over the Fourth of July weekend while covering a story on puppies that were saved from an Oklahoma animal shelter. That day, 12 puppies were saved, including Frida. Karla is happy to have met locals and is thrilled to have made Colorado Springs her new home.
