Kirk Varner is American Peabody Awardwinning Television personality. Varner is the News Director for 5 Eyewitness News on KSTP-TV5 and KSTC 45TV. He serves the Twin Cities, Central Minnesota, and Western Wisconsin. He joined the station back in April 2019 and before that he was working at WSPA-TV & WYCW as the News Director.

Varner is the News Director for 5 Eyewitness News on KSTP-TV5 and KSTC 45TV. He serves the Twin Cities, Central Minnesota, and Western Wisconsin. He joined the station back in April 2019 and before that he was working at WSPA-TV & WYCW as the News Director.

Kirk  has also worked in other leading television stations in Buffalo NY, Hartford/New Haven, CT and Cincinnati, OH. Also, he has worked in wide range of news and production roles in newsrooms including his first television news job as a news photographer for WCBD-TV in his hometown of Charleston, SC. Additionally, Varner was an Executive Producer for CBS’s flagship station, WCBS-TV in New York City.

Kirk believes the most meaningful journalism is his experience, practiced on the local level. The pioneer station in   gathering and delivering local news since it began  is KSTP-TV. Therefore, Varner is excited to have the opportunity to be a part of the KSTP team of professionals. and to help lead 5 Eyewitness News into the future.”
Previous Experience

In the ESPN’s “SportsCenter” network first decade, Kirk was the News Director.While there he assisted in launching its legendary slate of studio programming like “NFL GameDay”, “NFL Primetime” and “Scholastic Sports America.” Kirk excellently innovated television news operations. He oversaw the creation and development of ten different 24-hour local news channels as VP for Local News with Time Warner Cable, across Florida, Texas, North Carolina, and New York state.

Kirk actively participates in  RTDNA as a member. This is the Radio Television Digital News Association. Kirk loves to watch and attend as many sporting events as possible. He and his wife can’t wait to experiencing the dining, theater, and sporting happenings in the Twin Cities.

Kirk won a Peabody Award which is the industry’s most prestigious honor. This was when he served as Executive Producer of WTNH’s 2006 series of investigative reports on problems with spare parts produced for the Black Hawk helicopters used by the US military. His report triggered congressional hearings into the issue. Kirk has led multiple stations into winning of multiple EMMY® awards,  Best Newscast for the past three years in the Southeast region being included.
