Lori Brown Career

She joined Fox 4 in 2015. At the beginning of the pandemic, journalists assisted a lot of people who had to wait months to get the unemployment checks they needed to pay their bills. The widespread fraud that plagued an overloaded system was the cause of the delays. Among those whose names were used fraudulently to file claims were two state lawmakers.

Later, the system was helped by legislative reforms. In 2019, an investigation revealed an alarming new practice of apartment towing that made residents feel like they were being targeted. Viewers were shown in our investigation how to challenge illegal tows. She exposed a flaw in the Dallas Animal Services system in 2017 that was failing to investigate and prosecute cases of animal abuse in Dallas.

There were dozens of unsolved cases involving dead animals during the investigation, one of which involved a dog whose throat was deeply cut, but no single agency was keeping track of the cases. Only 11 of the 4,000 complaints of cruelty were brought to the District Attorney’s attention for prosecution. The Dallas Police Department has added an animal cruelty unit since the investigation.

The Dallas Bar Association and National Press Club presented awards in recognition of the story. A superintendent living in a $700,000 tax-funded home was revealed by another report. The house was renovated with $125,000 in tax funds by the school district without the board’s approval. The school district began its own investigation as a result of our reports.

The home was later removed from the Superintendent’s contract by the school board. Reporting on the devastation that Hurricane Harvey left behind in Houston in 2017 was eye-opening, but it was also inspiring to see the tenacity and generosity of Texans in the wake of the storm. She worked as a reporter for WFTV-TV in Orlando, Florida, prior to relocating back to her home state of Texas.

While she was there, a lot of her reports were about areas where the government could provide better services to its citizens without wasting taxpayer money. According to one report, the city provided a company with $1,000,000 in tax funds to construct a development that it never completed.

A different investigation showed how simple it was to buy illegal drugs right off the shelves at a store in Orange County. The store was raided by the Orange County Sheriff’s Office after the report was made, and the owner was charged. She previously worked as a reporter for KCOY-TV in Santa Barbara County, California, and WMC-TV in Memphis, Tennessee, prior to Orlando.
