Guerin kicked off her career at Dublin newspapers such as the Sunday Tribune prior to joining RTÉ News in 1 and becoming its youngest foreign correspondent when she was posted to Western Europe in 1990 at the age of 23. She stayed with RTÉ until 1994 and also reported from Central Europe, the former Soviet Union, Yugoslavia, and Sarajevo. Guerin’s coverage of Eastern Europe for RTÉ Radio earned her the 1992 Jacob Prize.

She left RTÉ to stand as a candidate in the 1994 European Parliament elections for the Irish Labor Party, a political newcomer from which he was personally selected to then become the leader of the Labor Party, Dick Spring. Despite not being elected at the convention, Spring insisted on being put in the ballot box. She did not win a seat and finished seventh out of 15 candidates with 6% of the vote.

BBC Career

Guerin teamed up with the BBC in 1995. From January 1996 she lived in Los Angeles, became a correspondent for southern Europe in July 1996 and lived in Rome until June 2000. At this time, Guerin also reported from Kosovo, the Republic of Macedonia, and the northern Spanish Basque Country. In the second half of the 2000s, Guerin was stationed in Moscow to cover the 2000 Kursk submarine disaster.

In January 2020, Guerin’s report on the Yad Vashem center in Jerusalem in , the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz, sparked controversy, criticized for allegedly linking the Israeli-Palestinian conflict to the Holocaust. Based on footage of Israeli troops visiting the center, he said: “The State of Israel is now a regional power.

She has occupied the Palestinian territories for decades. But some here will always see their nation through the lens of persecution and survival.” She was accused of anti-Semitism and incorporating personal prejudice against Israel into the Holocaust memorial service, which had nothing to do with the anti-Semitism campaign being run by the BBC and the BBC threatened to report it to Ofcom.
