Omaar started his journalism career as an intern at The Voice newspaper. In 1991 he moved to Ethiopia where he served as a freelance foreign correspondent for the BBC World Service. He went back to London to work as a producer and broadcaster for the BBC one year later. Omaar relocated to South Africa after being appointed the BBC’s Africa correspondent.

Omaar covered the invasion of Iraq in the daily bulletins of the BBC and BBC News. Many of his shows were distributed in the United States, where he became known as Scud Stud. He is an author of a book about his time as a BBC correspondent in Iraq called Revolution Day, which deals with the impact of the Saddam Hussein regime, UN sanctions, and the war against Iraqi civilians.

In September 2006, Omaar teamed up with Al Jazeera English. He was the Middle East correspondent for the London branch. During his time at the news agency, Omaar presented the weekday evening documentary series Witness. He also hosted the monthly magazine The Rageh Omaar Report, his investigative journal.

It was announced that Omaar would join ITV News as a special correspondent in January 2013. The next year, in 2014 he was promoted to international editor for ITV News. Since October 2015, Rageh has been Deputy News Host for ITV News at Ten, in addition to his duties as International Affairs Editor. Since September 2017, Omaar has presented ITV Lunchtime News, including ITV News London Lunchtime Bulletin and ITV Evening News.
