Additionally, as of February 2011, amid protests that led to civil war in Libya, she was one of only two foreign correspondents in Tripoli. Jawad provided some of the first accounts of the conflict. Fearing for her safety, after covering the conflict for BBC Radio News for several days, she went into hiding.

After being misled by the Libyan authorities about her whereabouts, she went into hiding and launched a series of reports on life in the capital of Muammar Gaddafi during the uprising and NATO intervention under the pseudonym “Tripoli Witness”. To ensure his identity, his telegrams were read on the air by his colleague. In, after the end of the war, he wrote a book about his experiences, Tripoli Witness: The Remarkable First-Hand Account of Life through the Insurgency.
