Ali-Khan studied at the University of Salford, Manchester where she acquired a degree in Philosophy and Chemistry. During this period in school, she launched her initial broadcasting career when she joined a commercial radio station, Sunset 102. She followed up her degree with a Masters in Arts, specializing in Television features and documentary production, from the same university.

After completing his Masters, Ali-Khan began his broadcasting career at the BBC, working on Asian and mainstream programming for BBC Radio Lancashire. Ali-Khan moved to Birmingham in 2000 and began presenting Drive on Asian Network and BBC 5 Radio Live. After 5 years at the BBC, Ali-Khan switched from radio to television, joining ITV Central in 2005. Ali-Khan premiered the East edition of Central Tonight with Steve Clamp before going on maternity leave in mid-2008.
During this time Ali-Khan also occasionally hosted ITV Weekend News in 2006. Ali-Khan come back from maternity leave on 2 February 2009 and started working as the host of the West Midlands edition of the program before merging with the East Midlands edition two weeks later and being renamed ITV Central. Following the merger, Ali-Khan became the main co-host on ITV’s regional evening show News Central, normally sharing broadcast duties with colleague Bob Warman.
