Brook joined the BBC in April 1976 as a current affairs trainee and was appointed producer of Radio 4’s Today in 1978 after working in Belfast, Birmingham, and Manchester. In January 1980 he was assigned to the BBC’s New York office as a news and current affairs producer. On December 8, 1980, he became the first British journalist to cover the night of John Lennon’s death. This was live from outside the Dakota apartment on New York’s Upper West Side.

Since 1985 he has written reports about it the American film industry for the BBC. From 1985 to 1998 Brook was a correspondent for BBC One from the United States on Barry Norman’s most successful film series. In 1999 he began hosting and producing the film news program Talking Movies for the BBC, which as of 2020 has run to over 500 episodes. He has an international fan base of film enthusiasts and key figures in the global film industry. The program includes film news from around the world as well as reviews of the latest films and exclusive interviews with top Hollywood and international talent. The show’s longevity has also allowed Brook to cover some of the top films in the world at festivals such as Cannes, Sundance, Toronto, and London.

Over the years Brook has also contributed to many other BBC programs and channels including Breakfast, Correspondent, Front Row, and The Late Show. Additionally, Brook also contributed to The Six O’Clock News, BBC America, BBC News Channel, Hard Talk Extra, and Today BBC Radio 4. He also frequently contributed online. In 2013 he began writing the column The Reel World for BBC Culture on news from the big screen.
