Dave Kinchen Career
Dave is an American journalist working as a general assignment reporter at WJBK/Fox 2 in Detroit Michigan. While attending Madison College, Dave worked as a writer and production assistant for WXYZ-TV during the summers between semesters. During his freshman year in 2001, he started Channel 7’s popular Student Reporter series, where he covered news and events from the viewpoint of young people. At the time, Dave was among the youngest on-air broadcasters in Detroit history, according to industry veterans.
After that, Dave began working as a full-time reporter at Lansing’s WLNS. He would then work for several years covering state politics and the auto sector in Michigan, making additional stops at WNEM in Saginaw and WEYI in Genesee County. Dave also served as a weekend anchor and weather forecaster for the latter. Since the mid-1990s, he volunteered to film videos for Father Cunningham’s Focus Detroit and Farmington Area School District athletic events. His return to covering Michigan news also means a return to hometown community work.
At the age of 14, he began a cable TV program called “Teen-Age” that focused on youth issues and broadcast in Farmington, Farmington Hills, Novi, and the neighboring areas as a result. Dave later received appointments to the Farmington Hills/Farmington Commission on Children, Youth, and Families and the Southwest Oakland Cable Commission’s (SWOCC) Cable Access Committee. As a member of the National League of Cities Council on Youth, Education, and Families, which was presided over by former Boston Mayor Tom Menino, he advanced this work nationally, having been selected by Dennis Archer, the president of the league at the time and the mayor of Detroit.
Dave testified before both houses of Congress in 2001 during a congressional briefing on the state of after-school funding. As the Youth Coordinator for the Michigan Municipal League, he led nonpartisan efforts to get young people involved in state politics while representing the Michigan After-School Initiative Task Force, Michigan Ready To Succeed Partnership, and the 21st Century Community Learning Centers committee.
Dave Kinchen Experience
Dave spent more than ten years covering news in Philadelphia, before moving to Metro Detroit. The Farmington Hills native worked as a reporter for FOX 29 in Philadelphia from 2011 to 2019. While there he covered many topics including the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse scandal and trial at Penn State, Hurricane Sandy, Bill Cosby’s criminal prosecution, the riots in Baltimore following Freddie Gray’s death in police custody, the fatal 2015 Amtrak derailment, the Eagles’ Super Bowl victory, and Pope Francis’ historic visit to the United States, among other local and international stories. His reporting has been featured on CNN, MSNBC, Inside Edition, Dr. Phil, 60 Minutes, and prime-time FOX News Channel shows.
He started a side career in 2017 as a music journalist and was able to have exclusive interviews with two of his idols, Paul Stanley of KISS and Sammy Hagar, the singer from Van Halen. As a result, the classic rock podcast “Rock of Nations with Dave Kinchen” was created. It broke many stories about interviews with legendary members of Toto, Yes, Judas Priest, Whitesnake, Blue Oyster Cult, and other bands and guitarists, including Steve Vai, Michael Schenker, and Joe Satriani. These stories were published in Rolling Stone, Variety, NME, and Other Music Publications.
For over two years, Dave left the news to work as the public relations representative for Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney’s administration, specializing in criminal justice and public safety. He also produced speeches and statements for the Mayor and other high-ranking administration officials. Dave rejoined Fox 29 with a more comprehensive understanding of the topics he covered, before moving to Detroit. When he’s not hunting down the newest breaking news, he’s always trying to get an interview with his favorite rock star, going to live music events around town, or supporting his beloved Spartans and Detroit’s illustrious teams.
