Jay Towers Career
Jay is an American journalist working as a Morning Anchor at WJBK/Fox 2 News in Detroit, Michigan. He started his career in broadcasting at WJRZ in Toms Rivers, New Jersey when he was 14 years old. After turning 18, he was hired for his first full-time radio gig in Atlantic City. First at WAYV and subsequently at Boss 97. Shortly after turning 20, he moved away from the Jersey Shore and joined WMAX in Grand Rapids as one of the country’s youngest program directors. A year later, he assisted in the launching of 93.1 WDRQ here in Detroit.
Jay was called back to the East Coast in the summer of 1997 to work as music director and afternoon host at Q102 in Philadelphia. He had such a strong connection to Detroit that he returned to 93.1 DRQ in 1999 to broadcast “Jay Towers and the Morning Revolution” until 2005. Additionally, he hosted the “Jay & Bill” show with Bill McAllister for the following four years at 97-1 before making his last radio appearance in 2010 on 100.3 WNIC. He still co-hosts “Jay Towers in the Morning” with Chelsea and Allyson on 100.3 WNIC every morning.
A funny thing happened back in early 2004. On a Saturday morning, Jay was promoting WDRQ’s “Lion King Musical” contest in the lobby of the Fisher Building. He was waiting to be interviewed about their contest by a Fox 2 reporter on the first day tickets were on sale, but she never showed up. Using an earpiece that the photographer had given him, he interviewed the people in line while reporting back to Deena Centofanti in the studio about the commotion in the lobby. The producer requested him to perform it several more times that morning.
Jay was called the following Monday by the News Director, who asked him if he would be available to cover for him for the next two weeks until they hired a new feature reporter, and he has been at Fox 2 ever since. He has been having the time of his life since joining the network as a Feature Reporter to Weekend Anchor to Morning Anchor. The most frequent query he receives is about how he does Morning TV and Radio Together every day. Due to Fox 2 and iHeart Radio’s excellent relationship, he is fortunate to have his WNIC radio studio. Where he hosts shows with Allyson and Chelsea, conveniently located near the Fox 2 News Studio. If you don’t see him on Fox 2 News Morning for a short while, it’s likely that he’s at the radio studio next door.
Achievements
In case you didn’t know, Jay’s favorite childhood memory dates back to the 1978 film “Superman The Movie.” He’s not hesitant to confess that he’s a huge fan of Superman. Director Zack Snyder noticed his obsession with superheroes and cast him as a Metropolis TV reporter in the 2016 film “Batman v Superman.” He created and hosted a 40th anniversary TV special of “Superman the Movie” in 2018. Additionally, Jay and Superman Historian Jim Bowers launched “The Caped Wonder Superman Podcast.” It’s available wherever you listen to podcasts, iTunes, and iHeart Radio.
Jay is privileged to have a huge platform in Detroit every day because of radio and television. Although he is fortunate to participate in several charitable events each year, he really wanted to use his voice to accomplish something close to his heart. He started WNIC’s “Jay’s Juniors” program in 2014. The idea was to provide a fantastic getaway for kids in Metro Detroit facing life-threatening or chronic conditions by sending the whole family to Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida, on a fully funded trip. Jay’s Juniors was founded, and he has had the good fortune to take more than 100 families on travels during the Christmas season. Even if some of their Juniors have sadly passed away, their families still treasure some of the most precious memories of their time together.
Jay’s father experienced a Septic Shock in 2017 following an aortic aneurysm surgery as a result of an undetected bladder infection. He truly is a living miracle, having come as close to death as possible. His dad, who runs their family business, is back to killing bugs. Jay always calls him every day at three in the morning before he leaves for work. Every year, sepsis claims the lives of 270,000 Americans, regardless of age.
