His interest in Minnesota weather explains why his great uncle was struck and killed by lightning as he was farming in southern Minnesota during the summer of 1952. His family vehicle had also been once chased by a tornado near Maplewood, Minnesota.

Shaffer’s family had also spent a night in the snow at a church in Winthrop as they were traveling to their grandparent’s home. This was also as they were waiting to get to Redwood Falls the following morning where they would open their gifts. Shaffer is originally from Stillwater, Minnesota where raised.
