As a high school student, Melvin worked as an “Our Generation Reporter” for NBC affiliate WIS-TV in Columbia, South Carolina, from 1995 to 1997. He returned to WIS in July 2001 as a news photographer and producer before producing his “Craig Cam” live segments as a reporter for the morning news team.

Before heading the weekday newscasts, he was elevated to a news anchor for the weekend morning and evening newscasts. Melvin also created a number of shows for WIS-TV that covered topics like Columbia’s homeless and education. Melvin joined WRC-TV, NBC’s owned and operated station in Washington, D.C., as the weekend evening news anchor in July 2008 after leaving WIS-TV.

Melvin left WRC-TV three years later, in July 2011, to join MSNBC as a daytime anchor while also working as a reporter for NBC News. Melvin co-anchored MSNBC’s coverage of the Republican and Democratic national conventions in 2012, as well as TV One’s coverage of Election Night with NBC News.

He also covered the December 2012 shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary. He covered the May 2013 Moore tornado, the July 2013 Asiana Airlines Flight 214 crash, and the July 2013 George Zimmerman trial. Melvin reported on the August shooting death of Michael Brown and the September murder of Hannah Graham in 2014.

He covered both the June death of Freddie Gray and the Charleston church shooting in 2015. Melvin was one of the NBC reporters who covered the Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro in August of 2016 in addition to covering the July mass shooting of Dallas police officers. In the same year, he also took over MSNBC Live, which later evolved into MSNBC Reports, from José Daz-Balart.

Melvin hosted his own reality show, Dateline, in 2017: Uncovering Secrets. On July 21, it debuted on Oxygen. Melvin covered the February 2018 Winter Olympics for NBC from the county of Pyeongchang. In September, he also got the job as Today’s weekday news anchor, and in October, he joined the hosts of Today’s Third Hour. Melvin co-hosted NBC’s annual broadcast of the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree lighting in December 2020. In March 2022, Melvin announced that he would focus on Today instead of MSNBC Reports.

He did not lose a child but when he was talking about his family and childhood, he opened up about losing his brother in 2020 through Colon cancer. Lawrence died at 43 years old. Lawrence spent most of his last days raising awareness about the disease.

Melvin walked off The Today show after a guest on the show appeared to get flirty with him live on air. He tried to leave and walked to the edge of the table after Kathy Buccio seemed to make him uncomfortable during the show’s budget holiday gifts segment. Earlier on, Kathy had sprayed Melvin with Jo Malone perfume and Melvin did not like it. He tried ending the show prematurely and leaving the show.
