Dan began his career as a reporter for Court TV, where he covered the trials of Michigan doctor Jack Kevorkian, the O. J. Simpson case, and the International War Crimes Tribunal in the Netherlands.

After leaving Court TV, Abrams was hired as a general assignment correspondent for NBC News from 1997 to 1999, during which he was appointed Chief Legal Correspondent. Dan anchored his own program, The Abrams Report, at MSNBC, before taking on the role of general manager in June 2006. Abrams moved to focus on his show Live with Dan Abrams, taking over Scarborough Country as Joe Scarborough switched to morning shows. Rachel Maddow, host of Air America Radio, was announced by MSNBC on August 19, 2008, to take over that time slot on September 8, 2008. Abrams then took on further responsibilities with NBC News, such as filling in as an anchor for the Today program. Abrams soon after founded his own media company, which included Mediaite and other websites.

In June 2013, ABC declared that Abrams would take on the roles of Chief Legal Affairs Anchor and Nightline Anchor for the network. In order to concentrate on his growing media enterprises, he left his full-time position as Nightline anchor in December 2014 and went back to working as the network’s Chief Legal Analyst on a freelance basis. A 2020 Poynter Report article referred to Abrams as the “go-to analyst on legal affairs.”

In addition, he co-hosted the show Grace vs. Abrams, which featured Abrams and legal analyst Nancy Grace debating important criminal cases. Following George Floyd’s murder and the loss of the video evidence of Javier Ambler’s death, Live PD was canceled on June 10, 2020, amid demonstrations against police brutality.
