Dan began his career as a reporter for Court TV, where he covered the trials of Michigan doctor Jack Kevorkian, the O. J. Simpson case, and the International War Crimes Tribunal in the Netherlands.

After leaving Court TV, Abrams was hired as a general assignment correspondent for NBC News from 1997 to 1999, during which he was appointed Chief Legal Correspondent. Dan anchored his own program, The Abrams Report, at MSNBC, before taking on the role of general manager in June 2006. Abrams moved to focus on his show Live with Dan Abrams, taking over Scarborough Country as Joe Scarborough switched to morning shows.
