Early career

Following graduation, Sawyer returned to Kentucky and started working as a weather reporter for Louisville’s WLKY-TV. Sawyer was given a general-assignment position after being promoted, but she soon lost interest in it. When Sawyer relocated to Washington, D.C., in 1970, she conducted job interviews for positions in federal agencies. Jerry Warren, the deputy press secretary for the White House, eventually hired her as his assistant. She quickly advanced through the ranks to serve as the White House Press Secretary Ron Ziegler’s administrative assistant before ultimately becoming Richard Nixon’s staff assistant. In 1978, after returning to Washington, D.C., Sawyer worked as a general assignment reporter for CBS News.

In February 1980, she received a promotion to political journalist and started appearing on Morning with Charles Kuralt’s weekday programs. On May 13, 1981, the president of CBS News said Sawyer will serve as a co-anchor when the network increased its morning newscast from 60 to 90 minutes. She was the first female correspondent for CBS News’ investigative television news magazine 60 Minutes in 1984. She relocated to ABC News in 1989 to co-anchor the news magazine Primetime Live with Sam Donaldson.
