Burns attended and graduated from the University of Florida with a degree in journalism and a minor in astronomy. He works for WSB as a chief meteorologist and also anchors at 4 and 6 p.m. on weekdays. Also, he received a seal of approval from the American Meteorological Society(AMS). Further, when he was only 14 years old he started his TV career at WSVN-TV, Miami as a part-time worker.

Also, he was an intern at the National Hurricane Center, Miami serving alongside Dr. Joseph Pellissier and Dr. Neil Frank. Later, he worked for WPTV-TV, West Palm Beach as a chief meteorologist. Three years later, he initiated his alum work in astrophysics at the University of Minnesota.

He did this while still serving KARE-TV, Minneapolis as the chief meteorologist. While working for KARE-TV he gained awards such as the Minnesota Teacher’s Award for a show that included students, teachers, and KARE-TV in a weather scholarship program.

In 1981, he joined the WSB team. Additionally, Burns has gained many awards throughout his career. First, while working for WSB he gained awards such as the Associated Press Weathercaster of the Year, Best of Atlanta, Best of Gwinnett, and Best of Cobb. Also, he has been selected for many Emmy awards and is a member of the American Meteorological Society. Further, he has the CBM (Certified Broadcast Meteorologist) Seal of Approval.

Moreover, he has earned many awards from Red Cross. In addition, he has awards like Best of Gwinnett Magazine for his weather broadcast, Best of Cobb Magazine and Best of Atlanta Magazine, Civil Defense and Coast Guard, and Associated Press. Burns enjoys hiking, looking at the planets and stars with his telescope, and fishing.

In 2016, Burns had a heart attack while broadcasting. He also underwent heart surgery and eventually made a full recovery. A leaking heart valve was taken out and repaired by doctors. In the middle of his weather report in 2016, Burns abruptly stopped and exhaled heavily before saying that he wasn’t feeling well. He inserted an aortic valve back during the procedure.
