Glenn  Schwartz popularly known as Glenn Eric “Hurricane” Schwartz is an American journalist formerly working at NBC10 as a meteorologist. He forecasted 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. newscasts on weekdays. Schwartz moved to Philadelphia in October 1995 to work as a meteorologist at NBC station WCAU, where he continued to do so until his retirement in 2022.

After receiving his degree, Schwartz started working at AccuWeather in State College, Pennsylvania. At the National Hurricane Center in Miami, where he worked from 1974 to 1977, he obtained knowledge of hurricanes. From 1979 through 1983, Schwartz made his television debut at Atlanta’s WAGA.

He started working for The Weather Channel in 1985 and was one of the organization’s initial “hurricane specialists.” Schwartz moved from The Weather Channel to WNYW in New York the following year. After watching a video of him getting tossed around in one, a coworker gave him the moniker “Hurricane” there. Prior to leaving WNYW in 1990 to work for WPBF in West Palm Beach, WINK in Fort Myers, and WRAL in Raleigh, Schwartz was employed by WNYW.

Schwartz moved to Philadelphia in October 1995 to work as a meteorologist at NBC station WCAU, where he continued until his retirement in 2022. During broadcasts, he was well known for donning a bow tie because it was stipulated in his contract. Schwartz was honored with a Philadelphia Broadcast Hall of Fame induction in 2010. Also, Schwartz was appointed chief meteorologist in 2002, a position he vacated to Tammie Souza in 2017. He lost the title without being demoted since he stopped participating in the newscast at 11 p.m.

Along with colleague meteorologist Jon Nese, he co-wrote The Philadelphia Area Weather Book in 2002. The book contains Schwartz’s live TV coverage of Hurricane Floyd. In January 2020, Schwartz released The Weathermaker, a work of climate fiction, in paperback. The Philadelphia Inquirer, Jewish Exponent, and San Diego Jewish World all gave it favorable reviews.

Glenn did live coverage during the Blizzard of 1996, Superstorm Sandy, and Hurricane Floyd. He was named the initial “storm chaser” by the Weather Channel. Glenn was named the chief chief meteorologist in 2002. However, this was taken away from him in 2017 without any demotion. This was a result of him not appearing on the 11 p.m. newscast. Glenn is a big swimmer(he does laps), racquetball, and softball player among others in his free time.

Schwartz has always exercised, committed to a healthy diet, and attended regular health checkups which have kept him healthy all the time. However, Schwartz underwent double bypass heart surgery in 2012.

This was made possible after he noticed the signs and symptoms of a heart attack. While he was on vacation, he went swimming and after a few laps, he felt pressure in the upper chest something he had never experienced. At first, he thought it was not that serious, however, went for a medical check-up after. Glenn was diagnosed with major artery blockage.
