Newman began his career at CHRW Radio in London, Ontario, where he became the first news director. He oversaw football coverage from Western Mustang as the officially organized campus station of the University of Western Ontario. After completing school, he got his first job as a reporter for Global Ontario in 1981. In 1986 he joined CTV as the station’s parliamentary correspondent. 1988 joined CBC Television as a reporter and presenter, where he hosted the program “Midday” from 1992 to 1994.
In 1994, Newman joined ABC News in the United States, where he ran ABC World News Now until 1996. In June 1997, Newman got promoted to Good Morning America anchor following the departure of Elizabeth Vargas. The show, struggling with ratings, continued to perform poorly. McRee and Newman were reassigned to other reporting duties at ABC in January 1999. Newman became Nightline correspondent and assistant host Peter Jennings and Carole Simpson on the evening and Sunday editions.
Newman won the 2007 Gemini Award for Best News Show along with Global National’s Kenton Boston, Doriana Temolo, Mark Riddell, and Jason Keel. He is the founder of Newman Media Ltd. In April 2010, Newman announced that he would retire from Global Television effective August 30, 2010.
Further, In August 2013, CTV News announced that Newman would be hosting a new prime-time show on the CTV News channel called Kevin Newman Live, which premiered on November 18, 2013, but was canceled several months later. In late 2014, Newman became the anchor of CTV’s flagship news program, National News, and in September 2016 he became the anchor and editor of the weekly investigative showW5. In September 2019, Newman retired from network television and now runs his own company, Kevin Newman Ideas, which produces television programs, specials, and documentaries.
