Earlier Career

Austin began his media career as reporter general for the Bournemouth Daily Echo (1976-1980). He then joined the BBC as a news editor and became a generalist in 1982. In 1985 he became a sports reporter. Austin joined ITN in October 1986 as a sports correspondent which produces news for ITV. He landed his first assignment on day one – to cover Australia’s successful Ashes of England tour as well as the America’s Cup.

2000s

In September 2001, he covered the 9/11 attacks in New York and Washington, DC, then the war in Afghanistan. In 2001 he presented the first season of the ITV reality show Survivor. 2002 Austin was promoted to ITV News’ flagship news program, the ITV Evening News. He also covered the invasion of Iraq in March 2003, when coalition forces invaded to oust Saddam Hussein from power. This led to Austin spending lengthy periods in Iraq.In October 2006, Austin visited Beijing as part of a series of reports on China’s economic growth. Austin traveled to Beijing several times and covered the 1989 Tiananmen Uprising.

2010s

On March 22, 2013, Austin presented Who Killed My Dad? The Death of Terry Lloyd, who explained the death of his colleague Terry Lloyd. She co-hosted the show with Lloyd’s daughter Chelsey.On December 6, 2013, following Nelson Mandela’s death the previous day, Austin hosted a Tribute to Nelson Mandela: His Life and Legacy Show.  October 2015 Mark was replaced by Tom Bradby on ITV News at Ten and then returned to ITV Evening News where he co-hosted with Mary Nightingale.

In 2016 Austin co-hosted several episodes of Good Morning Britain along with Ranvir Singh and Charlotte Hawkins. After thirty years with ITV News, it was announced in October 2016 that Austin was leaving at the end of the year. He presented his final show on December 22, 2016. Austin joined LBC Radio for a series of guest shows over Easter weekend in April 2017. On April 24, 2017, it was announced that Austin would join Sky News as its American correspondent. August 2017, Austin presented a one-off documentary for Channel 4 entitled Wasting Away: The Truth About Anorexia with his daughter Madeleine.

September 2018, Austin began presenting The News Hour with Mark Austin on Sky News, broadcast by Sky Central every weekday between 5pm and 6pm. It also offers Sky News every weekday at 18:00 between 18:00 and 19:00. Austin became the main presenter of ITV News when Trevor McDonald retired on 15 December 2005. On 3 January 2006 he took on the role of presenter on ITV News’ flagship program. Austin also co-hosted the ITV crime show Manhunt – Solving Britain’s Crimes, a live 90-minute show asking the public about Britain’s most wanted criminals.
