Miya Shay Cambodia

A community that is in desperate need of assistance is enveloped by the stench of storm debris in a rural area of Brazoria County. After Harvey’s wrath, around 200 families, primarily Cambodian refugees, face uncertain futures. Peter Sar, a farmer who built his modest greenhouse by hand, stated, “I do worry a lot because I don’t know how to start over.” It was destroyed by the hurricane.

The majority of the houses and greenhouses that line Little Cambodia’s unpaved roads are in disrepair. “Some families, such as Po Yong’s, are sleeping outside the moldy homes in tents.” “It’s hard to say because we lose the house, we lose the car, and we need help,” Yong stated. “We have no place to go, so we live in a tent.” Obtaining assistance has not been without controversy.

The community’s central temple is operational. It is now a meeting place for volunteers and a relief center for the neighborhood. Volunteers have been prominent in a number of citizen groups. The American Freedom Keepers, The Confederate Riders of America, and the Alvin-based SSG Group are among the groups.

The National President of the Confederate Riders of America, Rick Cameron, stated, “We’re here to assist this culture and community.” Assist them in rebuilding so they can carry on with their lives by remaining together.

However, at this time, it is unclear whether FEMA or any other government assistance will be included in the reconstruction. Eyewitness News received confirmation from the federal relief organization that employees visited Little Cambodia on September 10 but left after meeting with various citizen groups.
