Bosanquet had been part of the ITN team from the start, initially as Associate Editor. He then reported from many parts of the world and was a diplomatic correspondent for four years before becoming one of Alastair Burnet’s key presenters in the late 1960s. His collaboration with Anna Ford on News at Ten was popular with viewers in the late 1970s. As Ford later revealed, this relationship can prove troubling: at one point, Bosanquet, who had somehow discovered Ford’s mother’s date of birth, wished her something ” happy birthday” at the end of the show, unaware that she was long dead.

Bosanquet was elected Chancellor of Glasgow University in 1980 and served until 1984. It was a controversial election: shortly after his election, he made headlines when he arrived late and drunk at an official reception and insulted various guests including the Lord Chancellor of Glasgow ( and his eventual successor as a speaker) Michael Kelly.
